Every home service owner asks the same two questions on the first call: how fast will I see results, and how long does local SEO take before the phone actually rings?
Quick answer: For a home service business, expect the first new tracked calls in week three (from Google Ads and Local Services Ads), measurable results by day 60, and a mature system by day 90. Local SEO and Google Business Profile take 60 to 90 days to start driving calls, then keep growing with no extra spend.
The real answer is more specific than “30 days” or “6 months,” and it depends on which channels you’re paying for. Some start producing phone calls inside a week. Others take 90 days to build up. The expensive mistake is expecting SEO to behave like Google Ads, or expecting Google Ads to keep growing on its own the way SEO does.
Below is the timeline our team walks new clients through during onboarding. Week by week, channel by channel, with real ranges from plumbing, HVAC, appliance repair, electrical and similar operations. No “results vary” hand-waving.
What “Results” Actually Means
In this industry, results means one thing: booked phone calls. Impressions, clicks, rankings and “brand awareness” don’t pay anyone. A booked call turns into a job on the calendar, and that’s the only number worth tracking.
That matters because some channels show activity in days (an ad gets clicks) without producing a single booked call, while others look dead for weeks (an SEO project) and then send a steady run of calls in month three. Everything below tracks the metric that pays the bills, not the ones that look good in a screenshot.
Days 1-14: Setup (No New Calls Yet, and That’s Normal)
The first two weeks of any engagement are setup and measurement. Don’t expect new calls in this window. Anyone promising booked jobs in week one is selling you something.
What our team is doing in these two weeks
- Installing call tracking and setting up a separate number for every channel
- Auditing and fixing the Google Business Profile: categories, services, photos, Q&A, hours
- Cleaning up your name, address and phone across the major directories so they all match
- Building or rebuilding the landing pages for each service
- Setting up automatic review requests
- Opening the Google Ads account and starting Local Services Ads verification, which can take two to four weeks on Google’s end
What to expect: zero new tracked calls. Whatever your current marketing brings in keeps coming in. The work in this window is invisible to the phone system, and everything after depends on it.
Days 15-30: The First Calls Arrive
Once the foundation is in, the first new tracked calls usually show up in week three. Almost all of them come from the two fastest channels: Google Search Ads, which go live within days of launch, and Local Services Ads, once verification clears.
Where things stand by day 30
- Google Ads: 5 to 25 tracked calls. Cost per call is still high because Google’s algorithm is learning what a good lead looks like for your business.
- Local Services Ads: 5 to 15 tracked calls, if verification has cleared
- Google Business Profile: rankings start moving in the tools, but organic call volume hasn’t changed much yet
- Local SEO: nothing measurable yet. This channel runs on a 60 to 90 day delay.
What to expect: 10 to 40 new tracked calls for the month, at a cost per call that’s still higher than where it will settle.
Days 31-60: It Starts Working
By the second month the paid channels settle down, the Google Business Profile work starts showing in the map pack, and the first wave of new reviews comes in from the automatic requests. This is when most owners say “okay, something’s actually happening.”
Where things stand by day 60
- Google Ads: 30 to 75 tracked calls a month, with cost per call down 30 to 50 percent from the day 30 level
- Local Services Ads: 15 to 40 tracked calls a month, fully up to speed
- Google Business Profile: map pack rankings improving, with the first 10 to 25 organic calls coming through
- Reviews: 15 to 30 new reviews collected
- Local SEO: early movement on city plus service searches, not yet driving calls
What to expect: 50 to 140 new tracked calls for the month. Marketing stops being a question mark and becomes something you can measure. Most owners renew here.
Days 61-90: Local SEO Catches Up
Month three is when the system stops feeling like marketing and starts feeling like plumbing in the walls. Calls become predictable, cost per call lands in a stable range, and the slower channels (SEO and organic Google Business Profile) begin pulling real weight.
Where things stand by day 90
- Google Ads: 50 to 100 tracked calls a month at a stable $35 to $85 per call
- Local Services Ads: 25 to 60 tracked calls a month at a stable cost per call
- Google Business Profile (organic): 30 to 80 tracked calls a month from map pack rankings
- SEO (city plus service pages): 5 to 25 tracked calls a month, and the curve is pointing up
- Reviews: 50 to 80 new reviews in total
What to expect: 110 to 265 tracked calls in month three, with the cost of each booked call down to a level you can live with long term.
Months 4-12: The Long Tail Pays Off
Past 90 days, the slow channels take over as the main source of calls. If you’ve been wondering how long local SEO takes to pay for itself, this is the stretch where it does. Paid stays steady, while organic Google Business Profile and SEO keep growing month over month with no extra spend. The work done in months one through three keeps producing.
| Month | Typical tracked calls per month | Where most of them come from |
|---|---|---|
| Month 4 | 140-280 | Paid (Google Ads and LSA) |
| Month 6 | 180-350 | A mix of paid and organic Google Business Profile |
| Month 9 | 220-420 | Organic Google Business Profile overtaking paid |
| Month 12 | 250-500 | SEO and Google Business Profile leading, paid dialed in |
By month twelve, most home service operators get more than half their booked calls from organic channels that don’t charge per click. It’s slow to start. Once it’s moving, it’s the cheapest growth a home service business can buy.
What Speeds This Up, and What Slows It Down
Things that speed it up
- A bigger ad budget. More spend gives Google more data to learn from, so it optimizes faster.
- An existing customer list. Operators with 200 or more past customers can run a one-time review request and pick up 30 to 60 reviews in the first week.
- A website that already works. If the site doesn’t need rebuilding, all the effort goes into getting traffic.
- Local Services Ads verification already done. That alone saves two to four weeks.
Things that slow it down
- A thin review base. Under 30 reviews or below 4.7 stars caps how many searchers will call you, no matter how good the marketing is.
- A crowded market. Big metros where clicks cost $100 or more limit what a smaller budget can do.
- Calls going to voicemail. If 30 percent or more of calls go unanswered, the same marketing produces about half the revenue it should.
- Too wide a service area. Trying to rank in 25 cities at once spreads the effort thin. Five to eight cities, done properly, wins.
When the Math Turns Positive
For a typical home service business spending $2,500 a month on marketing (management and ad spend combined), it usually plays out like this:
- Month 1: A net cost. Existing calls continue, new tracked calls are minimal.
- Month 2: Break-even on the new calls alone, assuming an average ticket of $400 or more.
- Month 3: Net positive. New tracked calls bring in roughly 1.5 to 3 times the spend.
- Month 6: 3 to 5 times the spend, consistently.
- Month 12: 5 to 10 times the spend, with organic channels driving most of the gain.
This is why our team doesn’t take engagements shorter than 90 days. Anything less and the slow work never gets the chance to mature. The first 30 days are pure investment. The payoff lives in months two and three.
So, How Long Does Local SEO Take? The Short Version
First calls in week three. Predictable revenue by month two. A mature system by month three, and the organic channels paying off through months six to twelve. Anyone promising “leads in 7 days” is overpromising. Anyone telling you it takes a year to see anything is underselling Google Ads and Local Services Ads.
Lead Horizon Marketing builds every engagement around this timeline: fast paid channels for early calls, slower organic work for long-term return, and call tracking on all of it so you can see exactly where every dollar lands. Get in touch and we’ll map out what the 90 days would look like for your service area and budget.
Common Questions
Local SEO usually takes 60 to 90 days to start producing tracked phone calls, with early ranking movement visible around day 30 to 60. It keeps compounding after that, and by month six to twelve it is often the largest source of calls.
Google Search Ads and Local Services Ads. Search Ads go live within days and Local Services Ads start as soon as Google’s verification clears, so most of the first month’s new calls come from those two.
Because the first 30 days are setup and learning, and the slow-compounding work (local SEO, Google Business Profile, reviews) needs months two and three to mature. Shorter engagements end right before the payoff.
